Red Door Donation Policy
We greatly appreciate your donations of new and gently-used merchandise in clean, salable condition.
Tax Deductions
Your donations to the Red Door are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Tax letters are cheerfully provided. Donor determines the fair-market value of donated items. By law, thrift shop staff is not allowed value your donations for tax purposes (typical valuations for used goods can be found on the internet).
No goods or services are provided in exchange for donated merchandise. The Red Door will not take a list of your donations, does not retain a copy of the tax receipt, nor do we have ability to provide verification upon audit.
Donation Dos and Don’ts
The Red Door counts on you, our generous donors – we wouldn’t be in business without you! However, your donations are only beneficial to the shop and church if they can be sold or distributed to those in need. Unlike bigger thrift stores, we do not have recycling streams for merchandise that cannot sell. So please, do not donate items that are broken or clothing that is stained, torn, pilled or stretched out thinking “someone could fix or find a use for this.” Our shop is too small to wait for those someones. Thank you for understanding.
Due to space constraints, we ask that clothing be seasonally appropriate.
We do take smaller furniture items such as small tables, kitchen chairs and end tables. We can consider smaller dressers, kitchen tables, and upholstered furniture, but please contact us with the details and dimensions to make sure we have space before bringing – we would hate for you to have to carry them back home. We (almost) always welcome book cases (except for large wall units).
In General...
Before you donate, please ask yourself whether you would buy it in its current condition.
Here are some items that we regret we cannot accept::
We do not accept large trash bags of clothing.
(TBH, we have found merchandise that comes to us this way is unsellable more often than not.)
